LEARN Network

LEARN (Learning Engineering and Research Network) is a partnership dedicated to improving academic outcomes and affordability for college students by closing the gap between research and impact.

Our goal with this initiative is to foster a tighter coupling between research and learning impact. The rich data streams generated by personalized learning tools like Waymaker beg for a rigorous approach to data-driven, iterative improvement.  This virtuous cycle enables us to create and implement even more effective instructional tools and practice to continue improving student success.

Led by Lumen Learning, the LEARN network includes a combination of institutional and research members that collaborate on four types of activities:

  • Impact Studies: Rigorous empirical studies and publications about the impact of adopting OER and personalized learning tools on metrics linked to student success, retention and completion.

  • Continuous Improvement: Use of learning data to identify trouble spots, analyze why students struggle and recommend improvements to content and assessments that measurably improve student success.

  • Waymaker Course Roadmap: Input to guide selection and prioritization of new Waymaker course subjects, based on indicators Waymaker can improve: high drop/withdrawal rates, high D/F final grades, expensive textbooks, etc.

  • Collaborative Design: Co-creation activities with faculty and students to shape the design of new Waymaker courses, functionality, pedagogical models, content, assessments and supporting tools.
