Lumen Learning Hosts Boundless OER Course Archive

PORTLAND, Ore., September 15, 2017 – Today Lumen Learning announced it has made a catalog of Boundless course materials publicly and freely available, hosted on the Lumen Platform. This step ensures openly-licensed Boundless learning materials remain available to the education community after Boundless ceased operations earlier this month.

Boundless made a desupport announcement in May 2017, alerting users the Boundless Teaching Platform would not be available after September 2017. Working to preserve public access to the Boundless catalog, Lumen Learning collaborated with the Boundless team and its parent company, Follett, to import learning materials for all 22 of its master courses into the Lumen Platform. They are now available in a dedicated catalog, with supplemental faculty resources available upon request to verified instructors.

“As open educational resources (OER) become an increasingly integral part of mainstream curriculum decisions, it is important for the education community to come together in support of the resources many teachers and learners rely on,” said David Wiley, co-founder and chief academic officer of Lumen Learning. “By preserving the Boundless content, we’re demonstrating to the community our commitment to ensure that teachers and learners can count on OER over the long-term.”

The archive publishes and maintains Boundless course content in the same state it was provided to Lumen. Because the content remains openly licensed, people are free to take it and make revisions and updates as desired. Lumen does not plan further curation or updates to Boundless courses, and Lumen has no connection to the legacy Boundless Teaching Platform. Instead, Lumen’s resources focus on improving its own platform and catalog of 70+ OER courses in high-enrollment college subjects.

Boundless OER courses will remain freely available through the Lumen-hosted archive. Lumen offers learning management system (LMS) integration, content editing capabilities, and faculty training as part of a fee-based course support package for institutions interested in using these services for wider-scale adoption of Boundless courses.
